Mystic Krewe of Apollo Baton Rouge chapter is an all-male non-profit organization that produces an annual Bal Masque during Mardi Gras season. The Baton Rouge chapter was born from the Mystic Krewe of Apollo de Lafayette. In 1981, founding member Larry Fremin developed the Baton Rouge chapter, creating a board of directors that drew up a constitution and enacted by-laws that have been amended throughout the club’s history. Although the club is not affiliated with any political causes, they donate proceeds and participate in charity work for HIV/AIDS and for children’s causes. The Bal Masque adheres to traditional Mardi Gras Bal Masque customs; the captain (host) and co-captain work together to decide on a theme, they then work with costume designers and participating members to create the costumes and design the show, and royalty is elected and honored at the event. The materials provided on this site are a selection of materials from the Mystic Krewe of Apollo Collection located in the Baton Rouge Room of the East Baton Rouge Parish Library.
