Carl Stewart was born in 1926 and attended Grambling University graduating with a degree in elementary education. He received his Master’s Degree from Louisiana State University in physical education in 1957. He was an avid Jazz enthusiast and hosted a radio show that aired from 1988 to 1996. He coached basketball at McKinley High School until 1972 when he moved to Southern University. There he coached basketball and won three Southwestern Athletic Conference titles and took Southern to its first NCAA Tournament in 1981. He retired from Southern in 1982. In the 1960’s he did play by play for high school sports and after his coaching career he was Public Relations Director for the Minority Information Bureau and the Louisiana Legislative Black Caucus. Stewart was an avid audiophile and would record many meetings and interviews in the African American Community in Baton Rouge. This collection includes a sample of those recordings. Stewart passed away on April 18, 1997.
